Event Description
BRAZIL CARNIVAL SAN DIEGO MARDI GRAS BALL Feb 8th 2013
Paulo Batuta and Capoeira Institute, Incorporated, producers of the largest Brazilian festival on the west coast, Brazilian Day San Diego, bring you the first Brazilian Carnival Mardi Gras Masquerade Ballroom Party. The celebration will kick off carnival celebrations on Friday, February 8, 2013, at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel on Aero Drive, 8pm-2am, for ages 18+
The spirit of Brazilian carnival will be captured with three headliner bands, BatukAxe, Brasilidade, and Sol e Mar Samba School. The party will also showcase Brazilcali samba dancers, and capoeira performers from the Capoeira Mandinga Academy. Caipirinhas, famous Brazilian cocktails, will be made fresh to order, and mouth-watering salgadinhas, Brazilian finger foods will be served. Prizes will be awarded to the best masks.
This party will characterize carnival from two popular yet distinct regions of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, with culturally diverse music and performances throughout the night. Brasilidade, a samba and pagode band based out of Los Angeles, and composed of musicians from Rio de Janeiro, will add to their usual play list, marchinhas, traditional ballroom style carnival songs. Sol E Mar Samba School, a local San Diego group, will animate the crowd with enredos, samba for parades, with their rhythmic drum ensemble. BatukAxe, Made in Bahia, an Afro-Brazilian group based out of Los Angeles, fuses samba reggae, Brazilian and Latin beats. This high energy band will get the crowd moving with Bahian carnival beats. Brazilcali will feature beautiful feathered samba dancers and various dance routines to keep the crowd shaking all night. The Capoeira Mandinga Academy will perform Maculele, an Afro-Brazilian warrior dance, and a stunning capoeira show, featuring the Brazilian martial art that incorporates music into a fight that is hidden behind dance-like movements and acrobatics.
